Byte Size Converter
Convert between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and their binary (KiB/MiB/GiB) equivalents instantly. Free and private, right in your browser.
Convert between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and beyond, in both decimal (1000-based) and binary (1024-based) units, so you know exactly what a file size, disk quota, or transfer speed actually means.
How to use it
- Type or paste the number you have
- Pick the unit it's currently in (e.g. MB or MiB)
- Read off the converted value in every other unit
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my 256GB drive show up as 238GB in my OS?
- Drive makers use decimal GB (1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) but operating systems often display binary GiB (1GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). Convert 256,000,000,000 bytes to GiB and you get about 238.4, no bytes are missing, it's just two different definitions of the unit.
- What's the difference between MB and MiB?
- MB (megabyte) is 1000 x 1000 bytes under the SI decimal standard; MiB (mebibyte) is 1024 x 1024 bytes under the binary standard. They're close but not equal, and this tool converts using the correct definition for whichever unit you select.
- Does this tool convert bits or bytes?
- It works in bytes and byte-based units (KB, MB, GB, TB, etc). If you're checking an internet speed listed in Mbps, remember that's megabits, so divide by 8 to get megabytes before converting.
