Frequently asked questions
- Is there a standard version, or do different countries use different words?
- This tool uses the ICAO/NATO standard (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie... Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu), the same alphabet used by pilots, the military, and international radio operators. It's the only version that's actually a standard, so it's what you want for spelling out names or codes over a call.
- Does it handle numbers and punctuation?
- Yes. Digits get their standard spoken forms (0 is 'Zero', 9 is 'Niner', etc.) and common punctuation is converted too, so you can run a full email address or confirmation code through it, not just letters.
- Does my text get sent anywhere?
- No. The conversion happens right in your browser as you type. Nothing is uploaded or logged, so it's fine to run license plates, passwords, or reference numbers through it.
