MIME Type Lookup

Find the MIME type for any file extension. Enter an extension like json, pdf or .png and get its content type instantly, free and private, right in your browser.

Type in a file extension like .svg, .woff2, or .csv and get back the exact MIME type to use in a Content-Type header, an accept attribute, or a server config, handy when you're setting up file uploads, fixing a "wrong content type" bug, or configuring nginx/Apache MIME mappings.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste a file extension (e.g. .pdf, .mp4, .json)
  2. Read off the matching MIME type
  3. Copy it straight into your header, config, or accept attribute

Frequently asked questions

Where do these MIME types come from?
From the IANA media type registry and common web conventions (the same list browsers and servers use), so results match what you'd see in a Content-Type header or an OS file association.
What if an extension has more than one MIME type?
Some do, .doc can map to application/msword or a legacy variant. The tool shows the most standard, widely-supported type first so you can just use that one.
Can I look up an extension that isn't registered?
If it's not in the registry (a made-up or very obscure extension), the tool will tell you no known MIME type exists, in that case application/octet-stream is the safe generic fallback.
